Hoshangabad is a District Headquarters in the
state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a holy place and
picturesquely situated on the south bank of Narmada
River at the southern valley of Vindhya Hills. It is an
important district of the state because of its natural
heritage historical importance and industrial
development. Since ancient time to 19th
century it was the centre of power of emperors (Rajvans)
and it was known as Narmdapur. Present Sohagpur, a town
of Hoshangabad is the converted name of Sonitpur, the
capital of king Banasur, in the age of Mahabharat. It is
believed to have been founded at the beginning of the
15th century (1504) by Sultan Hoshanga Shah
Gauri, the second of the Malwa kings, from whom it
accordingly derives its name.
A
mention of Hoshangabad is not complete without
associating the holy river Narmada. This is one of the
most important rivers in India. It rises on the summit
of the plateau of Amarkantak at the north eastern apex
of the Satpura range in rewah (Central India), and
enters the sea below Broach in the Gujrat state, after a
total course of 801 miles.
About 50
years ago, the Archeological Survey of India discovered
ancient rock shelters at the Adamgarh quarry in the
Black Rocks, about 2 miles south of Hoshanagabd. The
ancient rock shelter contains primitive paintings in
several superimposed layers of unknown dates, ranging
between 500 B.C. and 10th century A.D. The subject
represents mainly the chase of wild animals, fight
between parties of men using bows, arrows, swords and
shields, some times riding on horse back and scenes from
pastoral life
Connectivity:
Hoshangabad is just 75 Kilometers away from
Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh and very well
connected through National Highway -69 and
