Hoshangabad at a Glance

Hoshangabad is a District Headquarters in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a holy place and picturesquely situated on the south bank of Narmada River at the southern valley of Vindhya Hills. It is an important district of the state because of its natural heritage historical importance and industrial development. Since ancient time to 19th century it was the centre of power of emperors (Rajvans) and it was known as Narmdapur. Present Sohagpur, a town of Hoshangabad is the converted name of Sonitpur, the capital of king Banasur, in the age of Mahabharat. It is believed to have been founded at the beginning of the 15th century (1504) by Sultan Hoshanga Shah Gauri, the second of the Malwa kings, from whom it accordingly derives its name.

A mention of Hoshangabad is not complete without associating the holy river Narmada. This is one of the most important rivers in India. It rises on the summit of the plateau of Amarkantak at the north eastern apex of the Satpura range in rewah (Central India), and enters the sea below Broach in the Gujrat state, after a total course of 801 miles.

About 50 years ago, the Archeological Survey of India discovered ancient rock shelters at the Adamgarh quarry in the Black Rocks, about 2 miles south of Hoshanagabd. The ancient rock shelter contains primitive paintings in several superimposed layers of unknown dates, ranging between 500 B.C. and 10th century A.D. The subject represents mainly the chase of wild animals, fight between parties of men using bows, arrows, swords and shields, some times riding on horse back and scenes from pastoral life

Connectivity:

Hoshangabad is just 75 Kilometers away from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh and very well connected through National Highway -69 and Central-Western Railway. Hoshangabad consists again a great privilege of being equidistant from Mumbai and Delhi and secondly its nearby Railway station Itarsi is the main junction point to connect all four metropolitan cities of India.
